  Open Water SCUBA Instructor

The Open Water SCUBA Instructor (OWSI) course comprises of the last 4 days (Module 2) of our Instructor Development Course (IDC) after the Assistant Instructor Course (AI) 3 day course (Module 1). Once the IDC is complete you are ready to take the Instructor Examination with PADI and earn your instructor status.

The OWSI is run by Rob Scammell, our very own Course Director, and comprises of the following after about 16 hours of home learning.

 

Dive Industry Overview (1 hr)

Discover where the dive industry has its routes and how its has developed and look at future developments.

 

General Standards & Procedures (1.5 hrs)

Review the big book of words (your instructor Manual), looking at PADI standards, membership requirements and administrative issues.

 

Legal Responsibility & Risk management (1.5hrs)

Look at how to protect you, your business and your students safety and explore local legal issues

 

The Role of Media and Prescriptive Teaching (1..5 hrs)

Discover prescriptive teaching techniques and explore the media available to help support this.

 

PADI Scuba Diver and Open Water Course (1.5 hrs)

Learn about course specific standards and explore training and marketing issues for the most popular entry level diver program in the world.

 

How to teach the Recreational Dive Planner (optional) (1 hr)

An important introduction to the RDP especially for candidates who have previously trained with other agencies

 

Teaching Children

Explore the differences in teaching children of different age groups, look at PADI programs for Children, child protection issues, and marketing children’s programs

 

The PADI Continuing Education Philosophy (1.5 hrs)

 

Look at developing your customers interests in diving beyond Open water, and you own continual professional development.

 

Business Principles for the Dive Professional (1.5 hrs)

Review customer service issues and pricing options along with how to effectively and profitably market a scuba program.

 

Adventures in Diving Program (1 hr)

That important next step for many divers, review how to best organise and promote this program along with reviewing the course specific standards.

 

Speciality courses & the Master Scuba Diver Program (1 hr)

Explore you students interests and help them develop the curiosity with a review of organising and marking various specialty program and the MSD program.

 

Rescue Diver Course ( 1 hr)

An important juncture in the career of many divers so review the course standards and look at organisation techniques for what many describe as the best course they have ever done.

 

Divemaster Course (1.5 hrs)

Look at training effective Divemasters,  the key to any instructional team

 

Diver Retention Program (I hr)

Explore the valuable customer acquisition and retention tools available within the PADI system of diver education.

 

Candidates are also required to complete :

 

Two confined water presentations

Two open water skill presentations in an integrated format

Skill circuit

Two teaching presentations

Theory exam

Rescue Diver workshop

Adventures in Diving workshop

 

After Successful Completion of the IDC Program

Candidates are the eligible to attend the IE which now consists of

 

1) Written Exams

General Standards and Procedures Exam

Open Book Exam 50 Questions 90 minutes- no make up allowed

 

2) Dive Theory Five Topics

60 Questions (12 on each) 90 minutes to complete-one make up allowed

 

3) Knowledge Development

Present One Knowledge Development Presentation- one make up allowed

 

4) Confined Water

Present a Confined Water Presentation-one make up allowed

 

5) Skill circuit -demonstrating 5 skills- one make up on one skill allowed

 

6) Open Water Presentations- no make up allowed

Teach two skills in an integrated format in the Open Water

 

7) Rescue Evaluation – One make up allowed

 

Candidates are also evaluated throughout the IE on their general skills & professionalism.


Should a candidate be unsuccessful they may at their second IE retake only the sections they where unsuccessful in, e.g. failure on the skill circuit would result in a make up only on the confined water sessions of the IE. Candidates will only be required to pay for the sections they have to retake at a second IE.

Course Pre-requisites

Must be a PADI Assistant Instructor or equivalent from a different agency (what were you thinking?)
Age 18 or over
Proof of 60+ dives (100+ necessary to take IE)
Be a certified diver for at least 6 months
Proof of First Aid and CPR training within last 24 months

Must be signed fit to dive by a physician within the last 12 months.

What's Next?

 

Once you OWSI is complete you're ready for the Instructor Examination. We have organised our IDC dates to coincide with the IE but later dates are available. Once you're an Instructor then the Speciality Instructor rating beckons.

 

Course Costs and Dates

 

The cost of the OWSI is £399, the AI is £299, combined as our IDC the cost is £599. Additional costs to remember are the Course Materials (as per the download above) and fees payable direct to PADI for registration and examinations if your aim is to gain instructorship.
